WORLD WAR ONE DIARY

Of Bryant Lillywhite

Welcome to my website. My Grandfather was a soldier during World War One. Throughout this time he kept a diary in the trenches. Two small notebooks to be precise, which he later typed up into a diary. His insight into daily life at the time is remarkable. This beautifully told story of one man's war is a unique well written resource. A fascinating piece of social history and a great historical teaching resource.

A BIT ABOUT THE BOOK

Two small notebooks travelled with a soldier through the trenches: a record of one man's war.
On his return, Lillywhite typed up his notes into prose. The notebooks, then lost for almost a hundred years, are now reproduced, alongside Lillywhite's prose.
Shocking, honest, gentle - Bryant Lillywhite writes on a dark subject with a light touch which speaks to us directly from the past.

"I read the diary last week - it's amazing! So timely reading it now during the 100 year anniversary of the War. It brought home the reality of it all."

"I am not a great reader but I found your Grandfather’s diary very interesting. There are many publications covering WW1, and quite a few are based on personal diaries.  I have looked at a small number of them but this one is the first I have read that gives me an insight into how the troops had to cope with life in the trenches, and their schedule of time at the Front and in the reserve lines.  It answered many questions that I have never been able to ask. Obviously reading this 100 years later it is difficult to imagine the horrors Bryant and his chums went through and even in his writing one can sense that expectations were very different in those days."
